Driving in Italy - International Driving Permit - What you need to know
10/03/25
If you're planning to visit and drive in Italy you might wonder if you need an International Driving Permit. This all depends on where your driver's license was issued.
An International Driving Permit in Italy is basically a translation of your home country's driving license into multiple languages, including Italian. It doesn’t replace your license but should be carried alongside it.
Here's who needs an IDP to drive legally in Italy:
Non-EU/EEA Drivers - If your license was issued outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), you will likely need an IDP. This includes drivers from the USA, Canada, Australia, and many other non-EU countries.
UK drivers - since Brexit, UK license holders must now carry an International Driving Permit unless they have a photocard license. If your UK license is a paper version or was issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man, an Internation Driving Permit is required.
EU/EEA Drivers - If your driving license was issued in an EU/EEA country, you do not need an International Driving Permit to drive in Italy. Your valid national license is sufficient.

Driving in Italy is a fantastic way to explore at your own pace. If your license requires an International Driving Permit make sure to get one before your trip - it's easy, inexpensive, and could save you from legal trouble or car rental headaches. Always carry it, along with your original driver's license, passport and rental documents as you may be asked to show them at police checks. Remember though that an International Driving Permit DOES NOT replace insurance and you must make sure you have proper cover for driving in Italy.
